Thousands Grounded By Fog at Airport

THOUSANDS of passengers were stranded at John Len-non airport as the fog led to the cancellation of flights.

About 40 services were axed during the worst of the weather on Saturday.

Despite clearer conditions yesterday, another 20 flights were cancelled because planes had not returned to Liverpool.

Passengers faced an average two-hour delay as services returned to normal.

Jim and Anne Steel from Wirral abandoned their holiday in the south of France after spending Saturday night at the airport.

Mr Steel said: “We booked another flight on Sunday morning, but that was cancelled as well. Eventually we gave up.”

French student Slavice Nivel also spent the night at the airport. She said: “I haven’t heard anything. If they tell me to wait another day, that’s what I’ll have to.”

Janis Sondars from Barnsley was facing a three-day delay for his plane to Krakow.

He said: “They’ve put our flight back to Tuesday. But it makes no sense to travel back to Barnsley, so we’re going to wait and see what happens.”

The airport’s Robin Tudor said: “We are slowly getting back to normal.”
