Feb. 11–STEELE CREEK — A local businessman hopes to capitalize on the recent influx of residential development with a landscape supply yard.

Steve McGirt, president of McGirt Trucking Co., a dump-trucking business located off N.C. 49 near Westinghouse Boulevard, plans to build the supply yard on about 10.5 acres near Shopton and Sandy Porter roads.

Charlotte officials approved rezoning for the site last spring. The rezoning application calls for a 1,500-square-foot sales office and 4,900-square-foot warehouse, but developers are still working out the project’s details, McGirt said.

The supply yard, which will be a division of McGirt Trucking, will have about five employees and will stock sandstone, topsoil, mulch, specialty stones and other landscaping materials.

The trucking company will deliver some of the materials stocked there, but the supply yard will also be open to homeowners looking for materials.

McGirt has owned the Shopton Road site for years and decided to build the yard there recently because of the surge of new residents in the area.
