Fraport Traffic Figures – January 2007
FRANKFURT and MAIN, Germany, February 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — In the reporting month of January 2007, passenger and cargo traffic at Frankfurt Airport (FSE:FRA) clearly exceeded the previous year’s level. With a total of 3,818,349 passengers using Germany’s international air transportation hub last month – three percent more than in January 2006 – Frankfurt Airport exceeded the previous January record of 2005 by about 93,400 passengers.
The major growth factors were European and intercontinental traffic. Growth dynamics of the North American and Middle East markets, which previously rose at only modest rates, gained noticeably. However, the Far East region, with its boom destinations of China and India, continued to be the primary growth engine.
FRA also achieved a new monthly airfreight record, handling 149,221 metric tons during the reporting month. This represented a 2.6 percent increase compared to the previous peak figure of January 2006, when 145,395 metric tons of airfreight were handled. Major growth drivers continued to be volume-intensive markets in Asia (up four percent) and North America (up six percent).
Accumulated maximum takeoff weights (MTOWs) at FRA also developed positively in the first month of the year, expanding by 1.2 percent to 2,177,324 metric tons. Despite existing capacity bottlenecks, aircraft movements climbed by 0.3 percent to 37,849 takeoffs and landings,. Only airmail declined slightly by 2.4 percent to 7,877 metric tons in January 2007.
The Fraport Group’s eight airports served a total of 5,153,484 passengers in January 2007, eight percent more than in the previous year. The highest growth rates were seen at Antalya Airport (AYT) in Turkey – where traffic surged 277.2 percent to 167,005 passengers – and Fraport’s two new tourist airports on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria. Varna Airport (VAR) recorded a 60 percent traffic jump to 14,908 passengers, while Bourgas Airport (BOJ) saw a fourfold increase to 1,545 passengers in the traditionally slow winter season.
Lima Airport (LIM) in Peru, South America, enjoyed 18 percent growth to 551,152 passengers. Fraport’s low-cost airport in the Hunsruck region of Germany, Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN), achieved a 27.5 percent increase to 269,506 passengers. Hanover Airport (HAJ) welcomed 313,626 passengers in January, down 0.7 percent. Some 17,729 passengers used Saarbrucken Airport (SCN) in the first four weeks of 2007, 2.5 percent less than in January 2006.
Total cargo tonnage (airfreight and airmail) for the Fraport Group rose by 3.1 percent during the reporting month.
