Burst Water Main Blacks Out Central London
THE heart of London was left without power yesterday after a burst water main flooded an electricity substation.
The Strand, Aldwych and Kingsway which house the Royal Courts of Justice as well as hundreds of businesses, were all affected. A spokeswoman from energy supplier EDF Energy Networks said 1,200 customers were caught up in the power failure.
“Engineers are working to restore supplies as soon as possible in conjunction with the fire service, which is helping to pump out the water, and water company colleagues,” she said.
“Once it is safe to get into the sub-station to assess the damage caused, engineers will have a better idea of when customers will have power restored.”
The spokeswoman apologised for any inconvenience caused.
City of London Police were also alerted to the problem.
A spokesman said: “There has been an electrical failure due to a burst water main which has flooded a substation.
“I believe it is going to take a while to get the power restored.”
