BRITAIN passed a landmark for green power yesterday.

Trade and Industr y Secretary Alistair Darling switched on a wind farm that took the country’s wind power to two gigawatts.

That’s enough electricity to power 1.1million homes .The UK is only the seventh country in the world to do so.

The milestone was reached when Edinburgh Central MP Darling flicked the switch at the Braes of Doune, Stirling.

The 36 turbines will provide power for 45,000 Scottish Gas customers.

Darling said: “The UK wind industry is to be applauded.

“We want 20 per cent of our electricity to come from these green sources.” Hitting 2GW is the equivalent of taking 1.5million cars off the road.

But Germany generates 10 times more wind power and Spain five times more than the UK.

Maria McCaffery, chief executive of the British Wind Energy Association, said: “This is a day for celebrating a significant milestone.”
