Power cuts come to haunt Albanians’ dream
TIRANA, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) — Albania’s daily power cuts, which usually happen at peak hours in daytime, came to haunt Albanians’ dreams early on Tuesday morning.
The whole of Albania was left without electricity, and the blackout lasted more than 2 hours until 7 o’clock in the morning while many people were still in bed.
Andi Beli, head of the state-owned Albanian Electricity Company, said the blackout was caused by a defect in a transmission line through which Kosovo exported electricity to Albania in the night.
Albanians have been experiencing power cuts for months due to surge of domestic demands and shortage of supply of electricity, with power cuts across the country ranging from 5 to 14 hours a day.
The small western Balkan country has been heavily dependent on hydropower and imported electricity. But lack of rain and decreased power export from its Balkan neighbors have plunged the country into darkness since last December.
