Scores Die in Train Fire in India

Posted on: Monday, 19 February 2007, 00:00 CST

At least 64 people were killed in a fire on a train about 50 miles north of New Delhi, the BBC reported.

A senior railway official told the BBC two explosions were hear before the fire broke out near Panipat in the northern Indian state of Haryana. The train -- the Samjhauta Express -- was traveling from New Delhi to Pakistan.

India's railways minister said bottles of flammable liquid were found at the scene and investigators had not ruled out sabotage as a possible cause of the fire, the BBC reported.

A Northern Railways official told the BBC two unexploded devices were found -- one on the train and one near the tracks.

Two of the train's cars reportedly were completely consumed by the fire. An undetermined number of passengers were injured, and officials said the number of dead may rise.
