Caribbean Airlines (Formerly BWIA) Orders 6 Retrofit Blended Winglet(TM) Systems for Boeing 737-800s

Posted on: Monday, 26 February 2007, 00:00 CST

SEATTLE, Feb. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Trinidad & Tobago-based Caribbean Airlines began operations, replacing BWIA West Indies Airways (BWIA), in January with a re-branded product, a new image and the performance and fuel savings benefits of Aviation Partners Boeing patented* Blended Winglet Technology. First retrofit occurred, at Delta Tech Ops in Atlanta GA, with 5 additional System installations scheduled from January through September 2007. With some of the world's longest 737-800 stage lengths, including a 2200 nm route from Trinidad & Tobago to Toronto, Canada, the Blended Winglet payback is dramatic.

"Caribbean Airlines invested in Blended Winglet Technology for fuel savings, improved range/payload and a more modern, high-tech, image," says Aviation Partners Director of Sales Christopher Stafford. "Projected savings are 110,000 gallons per aircraft per year with payback on investment of just over 2 years. On each round trip between Port of Spain and Toronto, Caribbean Airlines will save 370 gallons of fuel!"

With 6 Blended Winglet Performance Enhanced 737-800s soon flying the southern skies, Caribbean Airlines will save 660,000 gallons of fuel on an annual basis -- an important contribution to both cost savings and the bottom line.

"The cost savings and performance enhancement from operating with Blended Winglet technology are so significant for Caribbean Airlines that it became a straight-forward and compelling, economic decision," says Aviation Partners Boeing Vice President of Sales Patrick LaMoria. "The high-tech, modern image of our Visible Technology is also an important plus as it supports the re- branding effort, with a new livery, which debuted in January 2007. It's a win-win situation any way you look at it."

Now over 1600 Blended Winglet Shipsets are in service with over 100 airlines in more than 40 countries on 6 continents. Currently, 65% of in- service fleet of 737-700s, and 57% of in-service 737-800s, are Blended Winglet Equipped. By 2010, with over 4500 airliners upgraded, APB estimates that Blended Winglet Technology will have saved commercial airlines over 2 billion gallons of fuel.
