Posted on: Wednesday, 28 February 2007, 12:00 CST

MORRISTOWN, N.J., Feb. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The New Jersey chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators (NJ/IABC) announced recently that Peter W. Thonis, Chief Communications Officer for Verizon Communications, has been named the organization's 2006 Communicator of the Year. Thonis was officially recognized during the 2006 IRIS Awards ceremony, which took place earlier this month.

"Peter Thonis epitomizes professional communications," said Richard Ecke, Past President of the Board of Directors for the NJ/IABC. "His creativity and innovative thinking is a great example to others in our profession, and NJ/IABC is proud to honor him as a true industry leader."

Among Thonis' very notable accomplishments during his tenure at Verizon: Proactive Communications Leadership

Thonis was the architect for all internal and external communications during the successful Verizon 2005-2006 purchase and acquisition of MCI Communications. He also designed and led the "Great Place to Work" campaign that raised Verizon's profile with employees.

In addition, Thonis championed the effort to alter Wall Street's image of Verizon. Through a multi-faceted outreach, which resulted in dozens of positive major media stories and analyst reports, overall return to Verizon shareholders exceeded 30 percent during 2006.

Grace Under Pressure

Thonis has also proactively driven communications during periods of crisis at Verizon. His skillful handling of privacy and governance issues has not only protected the Verizon brand, but has also enhanced it in otherwise trying times.
