MONTREAL (CP) - The Federation of Canadian Municipalities and big city mayors are calling on Ottawa to create and fund a national public transportation strategy.
The mayors say they need $2 billion annually to maintain public transit systems and to expand to attract more riders. They add that investing in transit can help the country deal with climate change.
The mayors say that one city bus can carry as many passengers as 50 cars and pollutes 10 times less.
Toronto Mayor David Miller says such a plan would reduce road congestion and help improve movement of goods and services.
Montreal Mayor Gerald Tremblay says he's asking the federal government to respect Quebec's jurisdictions under such a plan.
