Siobhan, who holds the official title of Science and Engineering Ambassador, will be a guest of Prime Minister Tony Blair.

She will be personally greeted by Mr Blair and his wife Cherie along with other champions of the science and engineering professions at a special reception.

Siobhan’s ambassadorial work is done as part of Sentinus, the leading provider of business/education activity in the UK. She is also a member of the Northern Ireland branch of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Her role is to travel round schools promoting science and engineering wherever she can.

Recently involved in the Sentinus Civil Engineering in Primary Schools scheme, her work resulted in her being appointed a science and engineering ambassador.

The Downing Street reception will launch the UK’s National Science Week.

Siobhan, who works for the Ward Design consultancy in Castledawson and hails from just outside Coleraine, said: “It’s a huge honour to be asked to represent Northern Ireland.”

She added: “I suppose I’m a bit of a trailblazer.”
