Sen. Murkowski Travels to Baghdad
By Anchorage Daily News, Alaska
Mar. 17–WASHINGTON — Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, is making an unannounced visit to Baghdad this weekend, part of a bipartisan fact-finding delegation traveling under tight security.
The trip, Murkowski’s first to Iraq, was surrounded by secrecy Friday because of security concerns. Among the other members of the delegation are Republican John Sununu of New Hampshire and Democrat Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota.
The group is scheduled to speak publicly with reporters today, after they have landed. Such precautions have become routine for congressional delegations visiting Iraq.
The trip comes a day after Democratic leaders failed to pass a resolution restricting the use of troops in Iraq and set a target date for withdrawal. Murkowski and Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, voted against the Democratic measure.
