Q: Airbus A380

In Wednesday’s paper you’re talking about the Airbus A380 airplane that took off here Tuesday. It says it took off at 6:15 p.m. But I watched it land on the Chicago news channel WGN at noon Chicago time Tuesday. Now how could it leave here Tuesday night at 6:15 and land in Chicago at noon Tuesday? I don’t understand.

Airbus sent two of its A380 super-jumbo jets to the United States on Monday — one to Los Angeles International Airport and a second to New York’s John F. Kennedy International with additional stops scheduled in Chicago and Washington, D.C.

German airline Lufthansa operated the A380 flight from Frankfurt to New York. The double-decked plane, which traveled to Chicago on Tuesday, is scheduled to arrive in Washington, D.C., over the weekend.

The flight to Los Angeles International Airport was a joint venture between Airbus and Australian airline Qantas, which will be the first to offer A380 service out of LAX, a March 20 Daily Breeze article said.

The A380 that landed just before 9:30 a.m. Monday at LAX had no cabin, just some temporary seats for the two-dozen technicians on board and some computer equipment, the story reported. The super- jumbo jet departed LAX at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday on a return flight to France.

Airbus initially left Los Angeles off the flight plan for the A380′s premiere U.S. visit — until city officials reacted with outrage over the perceived snub, the Breeze reported March 18. The company hurriedly backtracked late last month and added the Los Angeles flight, which departed from Toulouse, France, the story said.
