Competition Set for Beal Bank Nevada Southern Nevada Regional Science and Engineering Fair
LAS VEGAS, Nev., March 23 /PRNewswire/ — The Beal Bank Nevada Southern Nevada Regional Science and Engineering Fair will unveil the research of hundreds of future scientists at its annual competition on March 29-30 at the University of Nevada – Las Vegas (UNLV). The Fair, now in its eighth year, promotes interest in science, mathematics and scientific studies for students in the Clark County School District (CCSD) and provides them a venue in which to demonstrate their scientific expertise.
Las Vegas-based Beal Bank Nevada, the sole title sponsor of the Fair, has a history of strongly supporting academic excellence in science and mathematics. Beal Bank Nevada spokesman Craig Singer said, “Our founder has a passion for mathematics and the sciences in general, and we are pleased to provide support for the academic development of Las Vegas-area students.”
The fair is co-sponsored by CCSD and UNLV, and is hosted by UNLV’s College of Sciences and the College of Engineering. Bill Brown, director of Planning and Communication for the UNLV College of Sciences, said, “With the support of Beal Bank Nevada, we have been able this year to expand our Fair to include high school students. This is a significant step that has taught us a great deal and forged a close working relationship with CCSD officials, and we hope to grow the high school aspect of the Fair even more in years to come.”
Participation in the fair is divided into three divisions, including elementary (grades K-5), middle school (grades 6-8), and high school (grades 9-12). Affiliation with the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) requires that high school students (grades 9-12) follow guidelines established by the ISEF. Rules for the elementary and middle school divisions are determined by UNLV and CCSD, and are consistent with but not identical to (at an age-appropriate level) the rules for the senior high division. Ron Yasbin, Dean of the UNLV College of Sciences said, “Given the increased funding and substantially increased student participation, we anticipate a first-class event, and we encourage the public to stop by the Fair and view the exciting work of hundreds of young scientists.”
The Beal Bank Nevada Regional Science and Engineering Fair takes place March 29-30 in UNLV’s student union building. The Fair will be open to the public Friday, March 30, from 2-6 p.m. An awards ceremony follows from 6-7 p.m. For more information, please visit the Fair’s website at http://sciences.unlv.edu/engineeringfair/ or call 702-895-2077.
