Police said the evasive action of a Mount Joy bus driver allowed 19 students from Donegal Middle School to escape injury during a Friday morning crash.

Bus driver Wendy Jarkowsky veered her bus away from a vehicle driven by her neighbor, Daniel L. Beury, whose car struck the bus after crossing the center line just south of Donegal High School on Route 772, Susquehanna Regional police said.

No one was injured, but Beury, 23, of 611A Wood St., Mount Joy, was cited for careless driving, according to police.

Police said his 2007 Ford Five Hundred was traveling north when it crossed the center line and collided with the bus.

The accident occurred about 7:30 a.m. as Jarkowsky drove south on Route 772 toward Donegal Middle School.

Lt. Steve Englert of Susquehanna Regional police said both vehicles had to be towed after the Ford struck the left rear tire of the bus.

But things could have been much worse, he said.

“(Jarkowsky) did a great job of trying to avoid the car, especially with the berm of the roads being soft with all of the the moisture we’ve had lately,” Engler said.

Police could not determine if Beury was speeding when his vehicle rounded a curve heading north on Route 772 near Long Lane.

Englert said Beury was ticketed Friday afternoon for careless driving, which is given to drivers who show disregard for the safety of persons or property.

Police said Beury and Jarkowsky live on the same unit block in Mount Joy.
