India to run passenger train to Bangladesh

NEW DELHI, March 27 (Xinhua) — The Indian Railways is planning to run a passenger train between Kolkata, the capital of east Indian state West Bengal, and the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka in next two months, Indo-Asian News Service reported Tuesday.

“We have decided to run a passenger train to Bangladesh which will ply between Sealdah railway station in Kolkata and Joydebpur station in Dhaka. We are trying to run this train service within the next couple of months,” India’s Eastern Railways (ER) General Manager N.K. Goyel said Tuesday.

The new train will cover a total of 330 km with 170 km in the India territory, he said.

“The train will comprise 10 coaches and run daily from both the sides via Gede, the last railway station which falls within India’ s territory,” said Goyel.

The Indian railway authority is doing some infrastructure work, like railway tracks and terminal development, at Gede, he said.

So far only cargo trains pass the border station to Bangladesh.

India and Bangladesh already have two bus services at present, one between Kolkata and Dhaka and one between Agartala, the capital of northeast state Tripura, and Dhaka.
