Aviation and Remote Access Are the Future of Satellite WAN Acceleration, According to Freesky Research

ARLINGTON, Va., March 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Satellite WANs have been an afterthought for some data networking equipment manufacturers -- a convenient place to generate a few extra dollars with products designed for terrestrial networks. But this will soon change as remote access and aviation transform satellite service from an industry-centered niche to a standard for mobile workers, according to a report released today by Freesky Research.
"Satellite data services are often associated with cruise liners, government agencies, and oil rigs. But the fact that satellite internet access is concentrated in a few industries says more about its past than its future," according to David Gross, author of the report. "Never mind the 600 million commercial aircraft enplanements in the U.S., private jets will fly over 3 million hours this year, and general aviation airports like Teterboro and Van Nuys process as many passengers each year as the Port of Miami, which is the cruise industry's largest point of embarcation."
The report, "TCP Acceleration for Satellite Networks" is part of Freesky Research's Routers on Rockets subscription service. In addition to addressable market data on the industries connecting to the Internet through space, it covers the major technologies used to accelerate satellite links, including XTP, SCPS, and all the TCP modifications. It also features analyses of the service providers and equipment vendors pushing the industry out of its maritime, oil & gas, and government confines.
