Pacific Earthquake Sparks Tsunami Warning
April 2, 2007
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology issued a tsunami warning after a large earthquake in the Pacific.
The temblor, measuring 8.1 on the Richter scale, jolted the Solomon Islands Monday and sparked fears of a tidal wave along Australia’s eastern coastline.
Surfing beaches and ocean pools were closed to swimmers and ferry services in Sydney Harbor were suspended, with commuters being transferred to local government buses.
Officials said the action was precautionary and while, we don’t expect there to be a huge impact, it’s very important we take all kinds of safety measures.
The Australian Broadcasting Corp. said the earthquake had caused extensive damage in the Solomons to the remote islands of Gizo, Lefang and Taro.
