Short Films Focus in on City Protests

ASPECIAL screening of short films next week is to focus on reaction to the demolition of Partick railway station and the historic Pollok motorway protest.

Called Rats, Roads and Railways – a film night for the Dear Green Place, the shorts show how ordinary individuals have responded to local issues.

Tesco Demolishes Partick Central Railway Station Because It Can, by Samer Bagaeen, follows locals’ responses to the levelling of the 110-year old building in January.

To Pollok With Love covers the protests against the building in 1994 of the M77 motorway, which cut though ancient woods and saw campaigners declare themselves the Pollok Free State.

Another film called Food For Life, by Maeve Gavin and Abi Mordin, follows volunteers and staff at North Glasgow Community Food Initiative, while New York is the setting for Tamra Raven’s From Rats to Roses, about community gardens.

The event is being held at the Centre for Contemporary Arts at 350 Sauchiehall Street on April 11. It starts at 7pm and will also include a post-screening discussion on the current Tesco campaign.
