Rail Line Threat
SIR – It appears the rail line to Cardiff Bay is again under threat from planners both in Cardiff City Hall and in the Welsh Assembly. As an occasional visitor to Cardiff, and usually to the Assembly buildings or to Lib-Dem HQ, can I say that this would be a step backwards?
Even with the detour via Queen Street, it is much more convenient for the rail traveller to stay with the train in order to visit the Bay area.
There is no one convenient stop near Cardiff Central for buses going to the Bay, and each bus stop makes for uncomfortable waiting.
This is not to mention the environmental benefits of using rail rather than road transport.
The planners missed a trick by not extending the Cardiff Bay line at the time the area was re-built. That chance has gone, but even now, with improved trains and an imaginative use of the railway viaduct, Cardiff could still realise what’s left of the potential of this feature.
