A U.S. government-funded study of solar power potential calls for new technologies and more investment by manufacturers.

University of Massachusetts-Amherst scientist Erin Baker and colleagues determined if solar power is to play a significant role in the energy equation of the future there must be technological advances to store that power, as well as additional private investment.

The report explored the viability of sun-fueled technologies through a combination of evaluations by experts and economic modeling, projecting solar power’s role in the electricity sector in 15-year periods through 2095.

The report — written in collaboration with Jeffrey Keisler of the University of Massachusetts-Boston and Haewon Chon of the University of Maryland — is to be published by the journal Energy Economics.
