Ulsterbus Driver Awarded EUR 115,000 for Sectarian Abuse

The award was so high because the publicly-owned company, Translink, failed to properly inquire into the case at its Ballymena depot, in County Antrim.

Ulsterbus driver Gerald Duffy’s Protestant work colleagues had warned he would be burnt out of his home and shot, subjected him to derogatory remarks about the Pope and taunted about Sinn Fein’s Martin McGuinness being made education minister.

They waved a union flag in his face, hid his car keys, drove a bus into his car, ordered unwanted deliveries and taxis to his home and made threatening phone calls.

A Tribunal concluded in his favour but, a year later, when the abuse continued he brought another case and won that too.

The company says it may appeal but the Tribunal declared that it was a cut and dried case.Mr. Duffy says he hopes the same will not happen to anyone else again.
