LAVAL, Que. (CP) - Premier Jean Charest inaugurated a subway line extension on Thursday from Montreal to nearby Laval that will carry an estimated 50,000 passengers daily.
The subway line, which has three stations, will open to the public on Saturday. "It's a great success and it's a good example of what we have to do for the environment, for transport and for the urban area of Montreal and Laval," Charest said.
The subway project cost an estimated $745 million and was announced in 1998 by former Parti Quebecois premier Lucien Bouchard.
Montreal Mayor Gerald Tremblay said it will help reduce the dependence on cars and cut greenhouse gases.
"It's the beginning of an important development in our future and in public transit," Tremblay said at the ceremony.
Several hundred public transit and maintenance workers protested outside, some of them demonstrating over lagging contract talks.
