A former Gulf War hostage will be speaking at an event held by the Birmingham Press Club in May.

John Peters, who came to the world’s attention when his Tornado fighter was shot down in the first Gulf War and he was captured and tortured by Saddam Hussein’s forces, will tell his story at the Press Club lunch at the Living Room, Broad Street, on Mav 11.

Mr Peters recorded the, story of his capture and torture in two best-selling books, and a documentary, Tornado Down, which was named Independent Documentary of the Year.

Today, Mr Peters is based in Worcestershire and runs UPH Ltd, a management development consultancy.

The Press Club is also offering guests at this summer’s “Night of Decadence” at the Mailbox the chance to win a pair of flight tickets to New York. Continental Airlines, which operates daily flights from Birmingham to New York, has offered the raffle prize as part of its sponsorship of the event on June 21.

The “Night of Decadence” will be an opportunity to eat, drink and make merry at the Mailbox.

The event, supported by a number of Mailbox venues including Penny Blacks and Don Salvo, will also feature a fashion show and a disco hosted by Press Club board director and Heart FM star presenter Ed James.

The event, which is also being backed by Barclays and the Royal Mail, is being held to raise funds for the Get A-Head charity, which supports research into diseases of the neck and head. Press Club chairman John Lamb said: “Continental Airlines has served Birmingham with a first class service for nearly a decade now and we’re grateful for the fabulous prize they have offered.”
