Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Electric power producers are finding themselves challenged to produce the most reliable, efficient and environmentally friendly forms of energy as global demand for electricity increases to record levels. One of the most plentiful fuels available for power plant usage is coal. In recent years coal has remained consistently competitive with natural gas as a fuel source and the result is the development of new coal-fired generating assets at a rate not seen for many years.

Currently in the United States there are over 88,000 megawatts of new coal-fired capacity that has either started construction or is in various stages of development.
