Parvus Equips Foothill Transit's Silver Streak Bus Line With RiderNet(TM) High Speed Passenger Internet Access

Parvus Corporation today announced that Foothill Transit's newly launched Silver Streak rapid transit service is now equipped with Parvus' RiderNet™ passenger Internet access solution. Running from Montclair to Los Angeles in Southern California, Silver Streak's state-of-the-art 60' articulated buses provide high-speed 802.11 Wi-Fi™ service free of charge to customers while they travel to their destination.
"Foothill Transit has been looking at new and innovative ways to enhance the advantages of choosing to take public transportation," said Executive Director of Foothill Transit Doran Barnes. "Advances in Wi-Fi technology now allow us to provide Internet access to our customers along a mobile route. The Silver Streak route is approximately 40 miles in length. Adding Wi-Fi service to the Silver Streak allowed us to enhance the visibility and attractiveness of the line."
Launched on March 18, Foothill Transit's Silver Streak line integrates a host of "SMARTBus" technologies, including automatic passenger counters, GPS vehicle locating system, high definition onboard security cameras and digital destination signs. The line delivers a "rail-on-rubber" concept, mimicking the efficiency and speed of light rail by utilizing freeway and HOV lanes for quick commuting between stations and stops.
"As pervasive as the Internet has become, free high-speed Web access on an express bus route is an incentive for commuters to leave their private automobiles at home and ride public transit," said Parvus President Les Goodman. "Parvus was honored to work with Foothill Transit on the Silver Streak project and expects passengers to realize productivity gains from using the service, which in turn will help create even more loyal customers for Foothill Transit."
The first public transit authority in Southern California to offer such a service, Foothill Transit states that customer feedback on the Wi-Fi service has been largely positive and more and more people are logging into the system everyday.
"As Foothill Transit is the first in our region to provide free Wi-Fi service, the agency is blazing a new path for regional transportation," said Barnes. "For a commuter who is traveling into downtown Los Angeles for work, the Silver Streak's Wi-Fi connection allows them to get a head start on e-mail and projects -- tasks which aren't possible when navigating traffic in your own car. In today's e-connected business world, keeping in the loop is vital to success. This is smart commuting, and we think it will become a crucial component of the business day."
Foothill Transit contracted with Parvus for the equipment, installation, and airtime, as well as content filtering, system monitoring, and 1-800 user phone support service to implement access on the Silver Streak line.
"Parvus' technical expertise and professional approach, as well as their positive performance and flexibility, were vital components of this project's successful implementation," said Barnes.
Parvus' RiderNet system is the first passenger Internet access solution to be purpose-built for the harsh bus vehicle environment. RiderNet offers commuter transit and private coach operators a reliable, hassle-free solution for bringing high speed Internet access to passengers. Users can easily check email, visit websites, and use VPN connections at broadband speeds from any Wi-Fi-enabled laptop or PDA.
