Second Day Blackout Sees Three Night Flights Cancelled
KUALA TERENGGANU: The Sultan Mahmud Airport is in its second day of a blackout, leaving 335 people stranded as three night flights were cancelled.
Malaysian Airports Holding Berhad senior general manager Datuk Azmi Murad said he was upset with what has happened but the contractors, which is supervised by the Public Works Department, have been working around the clock to rectify the problem.
“They are trying their level best to solve the problem and in fact they were confident that it would be done by today (yesterday).
“Should the problem persist, we will be discussing with the airline companies on re-timing the flights,” he said when contacted, adding that this was the first time the airport in Terengganu had experienced such a blackout.
On Saturday, MAB, in a press statement, said the contractor, would rectify the problem on Sunday morning, but it is understood that the case is somewhat complicated. A spokeperson from MAB said that damages to runway lights were normally settled within hours.
Tenaga Nasional Berhad had in a press statement said the problem was an internal one that was beyond the company’s control.
TNB only supplies electricity to the Airport via two channels, the main substation in Gong Badak and the one in Bukit Besar.
On Saturday, the blackout, caused by upgrading works which damaged a cable, left about 300 people stranded after three flights were cancelled.
