Condos Packed With Perks – Including the View
By SANDRA J. PENNECKE, Special to the Virginian-Pilot
Bayfront property maybe hard to come by in Virginia Beach, but Bayvista, a new condominium community on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay, offers a buyers a special opportunity with just 27 residences.
Located in Ocean Park on Shore Drive, just west of the Lesner Bridge, Bayvista is a six-story, brick development designed by McEntire Design, developed by Bayvista Properties, LLC and built by S.B. Ballard Construction Company.
Each of the models – The Pelican, Sandpiper, Osprey and four penthouses – provides views of the bay from single-level floor plans ranging from 2,276 to 4,400 square feet. Residences on the Shore Drive side also offer views of the Lynnhaven River. Several oak trees on the property were spared and now co-exist alongside the steel and concrete structure, landscaped with young trees and flowers.
Ann and Jerry Harris looked at most of the condominiums on Shore Drive because they like the beach lifestyle. Jerry Harris, 75, a retired builder and artist, took a look at the site plans and was sold on the project before it even began.
"We knew this is what we wanted and were delighted to find this place," said Ann Harris, also 75. The Harrises sold their two- story, single-family home of 31 years in Greenhill Farms and moved into Bayvista on April 1.
"Our grandsons loved the house and we held onto it for them, but with 4,000 square feet and a huge yard, that house eventually became too much for us," said Ann Harris.
Now between their 2,333- square-foot condo at Bayvista and their 1,800-square-foot winter home in Florida, the Harrises are quite content. Ann Harris loves to sit in the breakfast area looking out on the beach. "I like to sit there and write, read or eat," said Ann Harris.
Bayvista sits behind a protected sand dune and overlooks a city- maintained beach accessible by a private, gated pathway directly from the second floor of the community’s clubhouse. The 4,000- square-foot clubhouse has a media room with a 50-inch flat screen television, full kitchen, fitness center and heated pool.
Security, with laser keys and a self-contained parking garage, location, upscale amenities and the oceanfront were all selling points for David Belcher when he decided to move from Richmond to Virginia Beach. Belcher moved into his fourth-floor condo on March 18 to become Bayvista’s first resident.
With a balcony off the master bedroom and a terrace near the breakfast area, Belcher, who has a home-based business as an international insurance consultant said, "To be able to get up in the morning and put on casual dress and then look out at the ocean is just a wonderful feeling. It sets my day off to a great start."
The Harrises have already made themselves at home at Bayvista and plan to stay.
"This is definitely the last move our life," said Ann Harris.
