Cemusa to Present Transit Shelter Models at San Francisco City Hall Today

Posted on: Thursday, 10 May 2007, 12:00 CDT

Cemusa, a Spanish-based street furniture company, is presenting their transit shelter concepts at City Hall today and Friday for public review. Cemusa is among the top three competitors in the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authorities (SFMTA) transit shelter bid process. The SFMTA issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) in January that sought out proposals for the construction, design and maintenance and repair of transit shelters.

"Our core business is street furniture and we offer world renowned designs, unsurpassed maintenance and the best in sustainable practices," said Toulla Constantinou, Chief Executive Officer for Cemusa, Inc. "We believe we are the right partner for San Francisco and look forward to working with San Francisco to bring first class structures and amenities."

Cemusa is proposing to manufacture, maintain and manage advertising on a minimum of 1,100 shelters and 39 kiosks. In addition, Cemusa would introduce a bicycle sharing program that offers bicycle rentals and special bicycle rental kiosks to complement existing transportation nodes, reduce traffic, increase mobility, promote sustainability and allow residents to integrate exercise into their daily routines.

Cemusa has been working with local architects Arthur Gensler and Michael Willis who are well acquainted with the needs and preferences of San Francisco and international designers and architects including Richard Rogers, Giorgetto Giugiaro and Oscar Niemeyer.

"We are committed to partnering with local businesses and if selected, Cemusa pledges to work with local manufacturers and installers to maximize local economic development," said Constantinou.

The SFMTA is asking San Franciscans to comment on the submitted designs in an effort to provide the design and review committee with public input. The transit shelter models will be displayed today and tomorrow between 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. at the following locations:

Thursday, May 10 -- City Hall Van Ness Side

Friday, May 11 -- City Hall South Light Court

"Our company is proud to present its designs that will contribute to SFMTA's goals for increasing ridership and growing revenue," said Constantinou. "Cemusa's goal is to help the city improve its streetscapes while creating safe and practical public spaces. Use of recyclable materials and renewable energy sources further the environmental priorities of the SFMTA."
