Unionized Greyhound Workers Serve Strike Notice for Thursday

Posted on: Tuesday, 15 May 2007, 12:00 CDT

CALGARY (CP) - Trouble could be just down the road for those who rely on Greyhound.

Workers at the bus line have served official strike notice Monday night, meaning they can legally walk off the job on Thursday. A strike would affect passenger service from Vancouver to Ottawa, as well as parcel and courier service.

Officials with the Amalgamated Transit Union say the biggest issue in the contract dispute is what they call the "Americanization" of the company.

They claim ever since Laidlaw took over in 1997 and the majority of power was shifted to the U-S, the quality of life has gone downhill for unionized employees in Canada.

The company said it would resume negotiations with the union Tuesday, and business will continue to operate as usual.

Brad Shephard, senior vice-president at Greyhound Canada, said the company presented a fair and equitable offer to employees, and is disappointed in the outcome of the latest vote.

He said Greyhound is committed to continue working with the union on an agreement to avoid any disruption in service."

The union said it has tried negotiating with Greyhound four times since October of last year.

Greyhound Canada employs 1,600 unionized workers, ranging from bus drivers to mechanics to baggage handlers, and services 1,200 communities.
