Construction should begin this summer on the southern portion of Enbridge Pipelines (Athabasca) Ltd.’s Waupisoo and Stonefell pipeline projects transporting blended bitumen crude and diluent. In a decision released in late March, the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board said it has approved the project, including three pipelines and three pump stations between the Cheecham and Edmonton terminals.

The 762-mm (30-inch) Waupisoo line, with an initial capacity of 350,000 barrels a day and a maximum capacity of 600,000 b/d, will be about 380 kilometres long. Meanwhile, Stonefell consists of two pipelines. The proposed 610-mm (24-inch) Stonefell/lnter Pipeline Fund (IPF) crude oil lateral pipeline is 7.5 kilometres long as is the 324-mm (12-inch) Stonefell/IPF diluent lateral line.

The original Waupisoo project design also included a 406-mm (16- inch) diameter, 150,000 b/d pipeline to transport diluent from Enbridge’s Edmonton terminal up to the Cheecham terminal along the Waupisoo route. However, Enbridge Athabasca decided to postpone construction of that component until it has finalized shipper support.
