New Hyde Park’s Board of Trustees have granted a video franchise to Verizon this week, paving the way for the telecommunications company to offer its FiOS television service in the community.

Verizon has earned video franchising approvals from 37 New York communities. As with all franchise approvals in New York, the deal with New Hyde Park is subject to review by the New York State Public Service Commission.

Among the Long Island communities that have agreed to add FiOS: Massapequa Park, Cedarhurst, Laurel Hollow, Lynbrook, Freeport and the towns of Huntington, Smithtown and Hempstead.

A Verizon spokeswoman said the company doesn’t disclose local subscriber statistics, so it’s unclear if the company has made much of a dent against Cablevision, which has dominant marketshare on Long Island.
