Niger celebrates int’l telecommunication day

NIAMEY, May 17 (Xinhua) — Niger on Thursday marked the international telecommunications day under this year’s theme of ” connecting the young people.”

Speaking on the occasion, Nigerien communication minister Mohamed Ben Omar appealed to the private sector to join hands with the government in taking advantage of telecommunication technologies, in order to enable the youth to benefit from available information and telecommunication tools.

Omar said “this generosity is only possible if appropriate educative, administrative and legislative measures in favor of the youth are taken, as they are key to our information society.”

“Niger is gradually developing in its telecommunication sector, with two thirds of its population being computer literate,” the minister said.

He urged “other stakeholders to come together and build a solid and secure telecommunication infrastructure to usher Niger into the world of information technology.”
