A 400 million plan to extend the Nottingham tram system was submitted to the government this week.

Joint promoters Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council submitted an application for a Transport and Works Act order for the scheme. The plan is to extend the tram system to Clifton and Chilwell, where it will link with park-and-ride schemes.

“We are confident that we have a strong case for extending the Nottingham Express Transit system and are encouraged that the government has agreed to provide funding for the project if it is given the go-ahead,” said city council spokesman Chris Deas.

The councils hope that construction will start in 2010, with trams running on the extended system by 2013.
