LA/Palmdale Regional Airport Opens to United Airlines Service to San Francisco and Points Beyond

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Palmdale Mayor Jim Ledford welcomed United Airlines' first passenger flight to LA/Palmdale Regional Airport (PMD). Today's history-making arrival and departure marks the first time that commercial jet service has operated out of PMD.
Over 200 travel agents and local business leaders attended the inaugural event which showcased PMD's newly refurbished terminal, United's CRJ200 jet, and a presentation to Betty Moore of Lancaster, widow of the late Clifton Albert "Mr. Airport" Moore, a world-renown leader in civil aviation who served for 25 years as executive director of Los Angeles' vast four-airport system.
"The opening of LA/Palmdale is a major step toward realizing our city's goal of a truly regional approach to meeting the growing demand for air travel in Southern California," said Mayor Villaraigosa.
"Why sit in traffic for hours driving to another airport, when LA/Palmdale is right in our backyard?" said Mayor Ledford. "Just a short flight will take you to San Francisco where you can make a convenient connection on one of hundreds of daily flights to virtually anywhere you want to go. By supporting our local airport, residents will encourage more airline service that in turn will create jobs and economic impact for the entire region."
"This new service marks the beginning of a new era of air travel in Southern California -- an era of regionalism," said Los Angeles City Councilmember Bill Rosendahl. "I am delighted to see us take another giant step toward meeting the needs of our traveling public."
United Express will fly two roundtrips a day between PMD and San Francisco International Airport (SFO) where travelers can connect to dozens of domestic and international flights.
"We are delighted to make Palmdale our 26th California destination and to bring our Antelope Valley customers closer to the more than 200 worldwide destinations that we serve," said Bill Norman, Senior Vice President - United Services.
PMD is located on a 60-acre site at U.S. Air Force Plant 42. It is approximately 60 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles off State Highway 14. LAWA owns 17,750 acres of land adjacent to Plant 42, most of which is available for development. PMD is one of four airports owned and operated by Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), a City of Los Angeles department that also owns and operates Los Angeles International, LA/Ontario International and Van Nuys airports.
