Jun. 10–If you’ll be spending any of your summer vacation on South Padre Island, remember that you can travel up and down the resort community on the city’s free bus system.

Beginning this weekend, the WAVE will operate its summer schedule, which means an additional bus will be added to the island route.

From 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., the buses will take visitors and residents to and from Port Isabel.

Island spokesman Jason Moody said the WAVE has 28 designated stops along Padre Boulevard.

“But wave at the yellow bus, and it will stop and pick you up,” Moody said.

The rides are free on the island and Port Isabel.

The WAVE connects to the Rio Transit shuttle in Port Isabel so riders can take that shuttle from the Brownsville-South Padre Island International Airport, the Port of Brownsville, Market Square and the Brownsville BUS system. The cost is $2.

Moody says the WAVE carried more than 221,000 passengers last year. The free bus system is funded through state and federal grants, plus the island’s hotel and motel tax.
