IRANIAN Islamic Republic Railways (RAI) planned to award a contract last month to Rites and Ircon of India to build a new Y- shaped line from the Gulf of Oman port of Chabahar to link up with the Bam – Zahedan line, which is due to open early next year. The latter will connect the Iranian and Pakistani rail networks for the first time. The project will entail construction of about 600km of new railway at an estimated cost of $US 600 million, with funding split between Iran and India. The objective is to complete the project in four years. Chabaruir port is already being expanded, and the $US 450 million first phase of new terminals will be ready next year.
