Dustin in Bus Drive on Safety
By MIRROR REPORTER
DUSTIN the Turkey is to team up with Bus Eireann to warn children they must “belt up” this summer.
The kids TV personality will be travelling the countryside on a customised school bus to hammer home the safety message.
A recent survey shows that only a quarter of second-level students bother wearing the seatbelts provided for them on school transport.
This contrasts with three-quarters of primary school kids who belt up regularly on the bus.
Bus Eireann spokeswoman Erica Roseingrave said: “The main objective of the summer safety roadshow is to communicate to parents and children that wearing a seatbelt is vital for your safety.
“We especially hope to target second-level students and achieve greater compliance among this group.
“We know they are particularly reluctant to wear seatbelts.”
Dustin will be stopping off at various agricultural shows during the next few months in the new drive on safety.
Campaigners believe they are ideal places to promote safety as they are popular family events in rural areas where most of the school-going population use school transport.”
There will be bus drivers, inspectors and local school transport staff on hand at the shows to answer any questions parents may have.
Safety experts from the Road Safety Authority will also be present.
