MONTREAL (CP) - Montreal police officers are now patrolling the city's subway system to make it safer.
More than 130 officers will cover the subway system to help prevent such things as purse snatchings, fights, graffiti, drug dealing and gang activity. Mayor Gerald Tremblay told a news conference Monday at city hall the police presence will reinforce security for passengers.
"We are turning an important page in the history of public transit in Montreal," Tremblay said. "This decision, which has been long awaited, is no doubt going to improve the quality of life for citizens."
Police say there's enough crime to merit the subway cops.
The city's police force has integrated 67 of the transit system's cops into the 132-officer unit that will patrol subway stations and ride the trains.
