DEARBORN, Mich., June 21 /PRNewswire/ -- As that old children's favorite goes, "the wheels on the bus went round and round" and when all was said and done, Jennette Visser of Grandville Public Schools was the 2007 champion of the 30th Annual Michigan School Bus Driving competition. Grandville's Tammy Kellogg took second place and Saginaw ISD's Donna Mikolajski was the third place winner.
Forty-six bus drivers from around the state participated in the 30th annual event on Wednesday in Midland. AAA Michigan and the Michigan Association for Pupil Transportation (MAPT) sponsor the event that highlights the importance of those who safely transport thousands of our youngsters to and from school.
"These men and women have unsung jobs that are demanding and a huge responsibility," said Jack Peet, AAA Michigan Community Safety Services Manager. "The 12-station closed course they had to maneuver as part of the competition provided an opportunity for the drivers to show how they handle the safety challenges they face every day transporting students."
A written safety test and a pre-trip safety inspection of a deliberately "bugged" bus were also administered prior to the obstacle course on the grounds of Valley Plaza Resort.
The participants reached the state championship by winning or receiving runner-up honors at one of 12 regional competitions. Visser moves on to the National School Bus Driving Competition on July 14 and 15 in Boston, Massachusetts.
