Cattle roamed freely around Temuka on Wednesday disrupting traffic — both road and rail — causing general chaos.
Shortly before midday, two steers bolted through an open gate at the Temuka Saleyards and headed towards town.
Sergeant Paul Scoble of the Temuka police said yesterday one animal was herded back but the other bull bolted up Wood Street and was cornered in a paddock.
“Because it was jumping over the bonnets of cars, we shot it.
“It disrupted the railways as well. We contacted the railways and the train was stopped for 10-15 minutes.”
Mr Scoble said yesterday no charges would be laid.
