Jun. 27–A chunk of the downtown area will get free wireless Internet access by summer’s end, according to an agreement unanimously approved by the Anchorage Assembly on Tuesday night.

The contract with MetroFi Inc. of Mountain View, Calif., calls for the company to build a wireless broadband network using city facilities such as light poles and buildings. The network could eventually grow to include other parts of the city.

For now, wireless Internet will be available from the Port of Anchorage south to the Delaney Park Strip and from Gambell Street west to Cook Inlet.
