Consultancy Colin Buchanan is set to establish a transport planning team in Belfast, it has announced. The firm believes that there is now a clear policy framework for transport and an improved economy in Northern Ireland.

It expects that the province’s authorities will be seeking developments where greater consideration is given to public transport, according to its associate director Stephen Wood.

This follows the completion of regional transport plans and the introduction of a requirement for transport assessments to be submitted with planning applications.

Wood, who moved to Colin Buchanan from Northern Ireland’s Department of Regional Development, hopes to recruit “a critical mass” of transport planners. “The size will be determined by market demand,” he said.

The office expects an increasing workload given economic growth and a greater focus on the sustainability of developments. “Developers will consider improvements to all modes and we are ideally placed to help them with that,” Wood claimed.
