By Jason Kuiper, Omaha World-Herald, Neb.
Jul. 4–One person died and another was critically injured Tuesday night in a two-vehicle accident near 183rd and Harrison Streets in Sarpy County.
The accident happened about 6:20 p.m. when a westbound Honda Accord driven by Nichole Doering, 18, of Papillion, veered off Harrison Street. Doering overcorrected and drove back onto the road into the path of an oncoming Chevrolet 2500 pickup truck pulling an empty trailer. The pickup struck the car on the passenger side.
The passenger in the Honda, Michael Polsley, 19, of Omaha, died at the scene of the accident.
Doering was taken by medical helicopter to the Nebraska Medical Center in critical condition, though her injuries are not considered to be life-threatening, said Lt. Kevin Griger of the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office.
The driver of the pickup, Mark Hansen, 19, of Omaha, was treated for his injuries at Lakeside Hospital and released.
Griger said that Polsley had his shoulder seat belt on but that it was not known if his lap belt was fastened. It was not known if Doering was using her seat belt.
The accident remains under investigation.
