The Coalition for Luggage Security's Travel Fears Proving to Be True

Posted on: Thursday, 5 July 2007, 12:24 CDT

The Coalition for Luggage Security believes there is cause for concern when traveling this summer. A foiled terrorist plot to blow up JFK International Airport, a close call in London and the detonation of a terrorist device in Glasgow proves that there is a cause for concern. In the wake of these events our nation's airports have stepped up security, but the threat level has remained the same.

"These failed attempts have had little impact in fixing security flaws inherent in our current procedures. If we could separate passengers from their luggage we would solve most of our airport security problems. Heightening the cosmetic security efforts in our airports will only slow down more passengers and harass travelers this summer," said Josh Holm, Director of The Coalition for Luggage Security. "Something needs to be done before a suicide suitcase bomber takes thousands of lives and brings our national air travel to a standstill," he continued.

"The Coalition for Luggage Security urges Government officials and the airline industry to eliminate possible threats that result from the presence of luggage in airports and on passenger flights. Passenger luggage should not be shipped on passenger flights, and we propose passengers should be given a choice to ship their bags in advance of their trip to reach their destination before they arrive. This action would dramatically reduce the number of bags on airplanes and in airports. A decline in passenger baggage reduces the prospect of infiltration of terrorist devices in airports or onboard airplanes," said Josh Holm.

"Let us reach an understanding of thought with those who fear changing the status quo in our airports and on our planes. Freedom is not enhanced by more uniforms! Freedom is not reinforced by frightening our families, and freedom is not strengthened by making non-security citizens' dependant on uniformed citizens. Freedom occurs when creative solutions overcome repetitive and ineffective patterns of behavior. Separating passengers and airports from a tragedy before it occurs -- that's the value of freedom," said Richard A. Altomare, Chairman and Founder of The Coalition for Luggage Security.
