A school holiday outing in Indonesia turned tragic this weekend as 14 people were killed and another 48 were injured when a bus plunged into a river.

The Jakarta Post said Sunday the bus had been carrying junior high school students through the Indonesian province of West Java when it collided with two other vehicles and plunged into a nearly 33-foot-deep river.

Investigators said Saturday’s fatal crash was likely caused by a malfunctioning brake on the bus.

Those injured in the crash were rushed to a local hospital, where 22 were said to be in serious condition.

The accident also caused significant traffic delays throughout the region, leading to a number of alternate routes being implemented.

The bus had been taking the students to a West Java park to enjoy a tour during the holiday vacation, the Post said.
