CHAOS at London airports has triggered a surge in the number of people heading through the Channel Tunnel. Eurotunnel, which operates the link, carried 8% more cars on its shuttles to and from France in the first half of the year against the same period last year. Spokesman John Keefe said: “People enjoy the freedom of travelling without the hassle of delays at the airport.” Eurotunnel also claims to be gaining from an increased awareness of the environmental costs of air travel. Customers are also flocking to the Eurostar train link, with passengers up 5% on a year ago. Numbers should rise further when the link from St Pancras opens in November, cutting 20 minutes off the journey time to Paris..
