Single Jab Fights Testicular Cancer

Posted on: Saturday, 23 July 2005, 06:00 CDT

A SINGLE injection of a drug for testicular cancer patients is as effective as two to three weeks of radiotherapy, researchers announced yesterday.

The nine-year study, published in medical journal The Lancet, compared 1,500 patients given a single dose of carboplatin with those who had weeks of daily radiotherapy after their cancerous testicle had been removed.

The researchers said the drug could become the preferred treatment for the most common testicular cancer type, with the prospect of fewer side-effects.

The international study - led by Professor Tim Oliver from Bart's in London and Professor Malcolm Mason from the University of Wales - also found that the patients injected with carboplatin needed less time off work than those who had radiotherapy.

Around 2,000 men are found to have testicular cancer in the UK and Ireland each year. The majority are diagnosed when the cancer is confined to the testis - stage 1 disease - and the standard treatment is to remove the cancerous testicle.

Radiotherapy is effective in preventing cancer returning, but side-effects include temporary infertility, and increased risk of other cancers.

Medical Research Council senior statistician Sally Stenning said: "These results are extremely encouraging."
