Motorists Lament West Midlands Traffic

Posted on: Tuesday, 23 August 2005, 15:00 CDT

Tackling traffic congestion in the West Midlands must be a priority for regional leaders, the area's drivers insisted last week.

In a survey by the West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive (PTE), local motorists highlighted transport as a more serious concern than education or health. The poll found that 90 per cent think that congestion has worsened in recent years.

The West Midlands local transport plan, submitted to the government by the PTE this week, sets out a 1.3 billion package to reduce congestion and improve public transport.

It proposes to expand the Midland Metro tram system from Wednesbury to Brierley Hill and from Snow Hill to Five Ways in Birmingham, a plan endorsed by transport secretary Alistair Darling (Planning, 17 June, p6). It also includes proposals to enhance local bus services.

West Midlands transport champion Roger Lawrence warned that the conurbation must cope with more than 165 million extra journeys by 2011. "It needs a step change in its transport system and the investment to deliver it. If not, growth will be choked," he said.

Birmingham City Council is considering a study that casts doubt on an underground system instead of expanding Metro. It recommends a tram system for central Birmingham, while retaining scope for putting the tramlines in tunnels later. A decision on the future of Metro will be made at the end of the month.
