Jul. 18–UTB-TSC’s first doctoral degree is about to face its final hurdle before being approved.

University administration will present a complete proposal of the curriculum and instruction doctoral degree, which will have an emphasis in bilingual studies, to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for final approval. The board meets Thursday in Austin.

“We feel very good about it,” said Bobbette M. Morgan, the proposed director of the program in the School of Education. “We’ve had some great input from the folks at THECB.”

The doctorate degree already passed a major hurdle when it was approved in November by the UT System Board of Regents.

A doctoral program means that the small but growing university is producing “high quality” undergraduate and masters programs, Morgan said.

If the program is approved, fifteen doctoral candidates who have already been selected will begin the program in August.

The School of Education has 5,000 enrolled students. The university already offers 12 master’s programs and 16 undergraduate degrees.

The biology and physics departments are also considering a doctoral program, according to Morgan.
